Recently Ramadan Timetable made contact with the Halal Monitoring Commitee UK (HMC) regarding the controversy over Nando's whether it has Halal or not. I myself had visited Nando's (Ilford) various times in the past where they had in writing behind their counter that their food is halal. I have heard so many things about Nando's from my own peer's and was not sure what to think, so i decided to finally ask the Halal Monitoring Commitee myself and also give Nando's in Ilford a ring. This is what a HMC representative had to say.
"Assalaamu 'Alaykum W.W. We hope this finds you in the best of health & strength of Imaan.
HMC would just like to clarify our position with regards to passing comment on butchers, fast food outlets, restaurants, slaughterhouses, etc. The policy of HMC is not to comment on any of the the above other than to say that if it not certified by ourselves and we do not have an inspector monitoring them then we cannot give our assurance.
HMC has a strict criteria in that we not allow the stunning, prior to Dhabh, of any animal for our certification process and *Freemans, the supplier of chicken to Nando's, administer stunning to the chicken before Dhabh, a fact freely admitted by both themselves and Nandos. This was the case in 2005 and in our knowledge it is still the same to this present day, and Allah knows best.
With regards to the issue of the stunning of animals before Dhabh please see the 'Stunning Issues' link http://www.halalmc.co.uk/resources/issue_stunning.html on our website and you may also consider reading any of Dr Majid Khatme's articles and audio which you may search on the web, these are highly informative.
We receive many queries with regards to Nando's and the answer given always is that we do not pass comment if they are not certified by ourselves. Nando's themselves also know it is not our policy to pass comment.
May The Almighty keep us all on the straight path, keep us steadfast on His Deen, keep us under His protection at all times and save us from what He has made unlawful for us, ameen."

HMC have made it clear that they cannot pass comment on Nando's as they "are not certified by HMC". But as you can see HMC have made it clear that "They do not allow the stunning, prior to Dhabh, of any animal for their certification process", prior *Freemans, the supplier of chicken to Nando's, administer stunning to the chicken before Dhabh, a "fact" freely admitted by both themselves and Nandos.
I then contacted Nando's (Ilford) by telephone. My first question to the waitress who answered the telephone was who their supplier was, she then asked whether my query was about the chicken being Halal, i replied yes. She then assured me that it was Halal and they had a certificate to prove it on the wall. I asked her to read out what the certificate had said and who it was certified by, she then told me it was certified by "Freemans". I then had nothing more to say after that.
Conclusion? Haram. So what are we Nando lovers going to do now? Well we have just the solution..! Visit your local Pandoo's "The Totally Halal Experience!"
